Using a FILE FOLDER to teach PLaCe VaLuE

I came up with this idea because my students were really struggling with the place value blocks. They just couldn't get it, so I decided each student would make their own place value folder that they could use in class & take home too.
File Folder Instructions:
Fold the bottom of the file folder up about 3 inches* Cut along the crease up to the fold* Cut two more times on the left, & 2 more on the right(you will have six flaps)* Label each flap* Hold down three alternating flaps & tape down with clear packaging tape* Then, tape the three flaps that are left* Now you have 6 pockets.
Number Cards:
Fold the index cards horizontaly* Have students number the top of the cards 0-9 with a red marker* Have them number the bottom with zeros using a black marker.
Pockets for Number Cards:
To make my library pockets to hold the number cards, I use a mailing envelope. Seal the envelope, fold in half, & cut. You now have 2 pockets!
Great folder for place value & to teach the "value" of each digit!

Save your hallway displays with a ZiPLoC Quilt

I saw this ziploc quilt at a workshop & fell in love. What a great way to display your student's work & keep it protected too. If your classroom is located in a high traffic hallway, you will definitely need one of these. They are super easy to make & VERY CHEAP!. You can also make it as large or as small as you want. All you need is gallon-sized ziploc bags & duct tape. I've seen duct tape in all colors & designs. My favorite has been polka dotted. These ziploc quilts will out last you too. I've had mine for 2 years. At the end of the school year, I fold it up & put it in my cabinet. Some ziploc bags have tags where you write the date on. My quilt has them (see 2nd pic above). Make sure they are all facing the same direction when you make your quilt. You don't want to see the tag when you place your student's work inside. What else can we use this ziploc quilt for? C'mon, "think outside the school box"

Blogger Newbie

Okay, so here it goes. This is my first blog ever!!! Don't know quite yet what to write but I'm sure once I get the hang of this it will come to me naturally. My one goal for this blog is for all of us to help eachother "think outside the box" & by that I mean that we don't need to empty out our wallets or kill millions of trees to teach our kiddos. We can create many lessons with items found around the house or in our classrooms to make learning hands-on & fun. School starts on Monday so HaPpY TeAcHiNg to all!
